FF6 did this well, giving you both halves of the thing. What they left out was the third part, maybe of putting the world back together...even though leaving it where they did, and folding it in the credit sequence, was total genius vidya storytelling.

If PS2 is where it ends, then this would indeed make sense as to where the story of PS5/X/? would pick up.
