Depends on your perspective. I'd agree that, if you spend a lot of time playing retro games, it's more cost & time effective to emulate. If you only have a passing nostalgia for them, it's the opposite.

That said, a friend of mine who "doesn't play video games" visited a few weeks ago, and saw my Snes mini under the tv. She asked if it had Mario Kart - we spent the rest of the afternoon playing that.

Point being, the minis are a great way of encouraging others to enjoy the hobby with you. If I'd brought out my emulator and, apropos to nothing, asked her if she wanted to play Snes games, she probably would've looked at me funny.

And they make good sense from a commercial POV, given that, if they're done right, they make a lot of money.
