That's not the problem. The problem is they made all characters, mobs, items, etc into 3d. The environment art looks fine or sometimes good even. 3d cannot and will never capture the feel of the originals. That's the real underlying reason why D3, D2r and soon D4 will not feel like a Diablo game. The sprite based aesthetics account for at least half the feel of Diablo and Diablo 2 along with the music/sound effects, story and gameplay. If Diablo 2 was made with the original 3d models the sprites were based upon I'm about 99% certain it would not be remembered as fondly as it is today. The original 3d models do not have the same charm or appeal as the sprites. Look at Starcraft Remastered for an example. They created higher fidelity sprites from the originals and it looks great and reinvigorated the community. D2r just looks like a totally different game. The animations look stupid, the new UI is awful and completely looses ancient fantasy book-like aesthetic of the original, the inventory icons are like 90% terrible, the new lighting completely kills the ambience that the original had and the skill effects are anywhere from comically overdone to embarrassingly wimpy looking. Plus it just looks silly seeing these big epic looking enemies and they come and default attack you. The original games gameplay was matched to the aesthetics and it looks silly and totally out of whack in 3d. Anyone who likes this is a total shit eater that's for sure.
