Pic related goes into technical detail regarding the Atari VCS and the making of a couple of games for the system such as 'Combat' and 'Pitfall!'.

I'd also recommend Master of Doom by David Kushner. While it doesn't go into technical detail it does discuss some of the technical difficulties Carmack faced when creating the engines for Commander Keen and Doom. In the earlier chapters of the book you also get a sense of how being a hobbyist programmer back in the 80's was, which is neat.
