Actually there was never a time nerds were sexier than the mid to late 90s there were even nerd groupies believe it or not. The whole fake nerd aesthetic floating around ever since is a direct result of the era when OP was conceived. It's very likely many ~20 year olds are legitimate second generation nerds although if they are it's also pretty likely they were raised by their slutty single moms once being the local champion at Magic: The Gathering stopped seeming so Alpha to her.
