Find what you enjoy
Do not force yourself to play a 'classic' unless you really enjoy it. The original Castlevania is a good game but it wasn't for everybody when it came out and it sure as hell isn't for everybody now.
But do give everything (within reason) a shot. If you get an emulator (which you should, because buying retro games will be expensive and time consuming. Pity those who seek Earthbound), you should give anything that looks even remotely interesting to you a try of about twenty minutes, maybe an hour for RPGs to allow for their slower pace. I thought Pocky and Rocky looked goofy as hell but its now one of my favorite titles for the thing.

And sweet dear god do not attempt to play every single retro game in existence. You might be able to pull that off with the N64 or the Dreamcast if you stay within English releases, but otherwise it just isn't even remotely feasible. Especially with shit like the nearly three decades worth of PC games (plus mods. Here's looking at you, Doom General), the SNES or the PS1/PSX/AutismAcronymSystem. Too many releases.

/vr/ is probably right to turn up their noses to TOP TEN MUST PLAY RETRO GAMES lists, but they're not a bad starting point. If you ask /vr/ for must play games, you'll get anywhere from a max character post to a twenty post list of games, depending on the system. The clickbait lists are much easier to digest and are good jump-off point for getting into retro games.

If you must have a list right now: think of any current game character or series. Now go back and play their older stuff. Mario, Sonic, Spyro, etc. Not exactly diamond in the rough tier stuff, but they're generally solid. Hell, most Nintendo IPs are solid.

That should make for some decent starting advice. Now find an emulator for whatever you want to play (we have a thread for that, check the catalog), grab some roms/isos with names that seem familiar, and go play some goddamn vidya.

This seems like the place to ask because I'm not sure where else to go; I remember when flip-keyboard phones started becoming popular there was a turn based Doom RPG.

I never beat it due to my phone breaking shortly after getting the game, and it wasn't available on the next phone I had. I was wondering if anybody here has heard about it/knows how/where I can play it on PC?
