Never played a Castlevania game before in my life, I know they are popular. Atm going through SotN, I have only a cloth tunic, a short sword, leather shield, and knives...and there's this guy who swings a black jack around, and I kill him, keep walking forward a bit and now there's a gaibon who jumps up and down and rapes my shit with fire breath. This time I tried backtracking to maybe spam knives at him and he throws a hadoken at me that kills me instantly.

I'm starting to find it kind of annoying that I have to go ALL the way back with almost no health to fight this bastard. Is this supposed to be the fun part? Figured I'd ask retro in case I'm missing the point entirely.

My grandparents got me a Wii as a graduation present in '07. I got bored with every game I purchased, except for Super Mario Galaxy. I didn't want a 360 or PS3, so I started playing my PlayStation again. Doing a lot of Goodwill searches the past 6 months has held my interest in the console.

Pic related is my new favorite game on the console; just got it for Christmas.

Hey /vr/ I want to start collecting some PS1 games since I only had Nintendo back then

There any point in buying a PS1 or should I just go with a PS2 seeing how it is backwards compatible.

>What game is this?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlevania:_Symphony_of_the_Night

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a PS1/PSX game released by Konami in 1997. It's "Metroidvania" platformer, or it has gameplay based around discovering new upgrades to progress in a semi-non-linear order. Sequence breaking is common.

>What is Retro Game of the Week?
It's a group of people who want to play and discuss retro games each week, almost like a /vr/ book club. Each week a thread is created for a new game. This week’s game discussion will last until Sunday 10/27/13. Feel free to discuss anything you want related to the current game.

>What kind of games get chosen?
Anything /vr/ material. Original OP took recommendations from the threads and chose the games himself. Someone tried a voting system this week but the thread died. Feel free to discuss future games and methods for choosing games in this thread as well.

Week 1 – DuckTales
Week 2 – For the Frog the Bell Tolls
Week 3 – Clock Tower
Week 4: - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Current)

>Emulators allowed?
Of course.

>Where can I get emulator though?
Google. It's not that hard to find. If you're having trouble deciding on one, though, look at good ol' emu wiki: http://emulation-general.wikia.com/wiki/PlayStation_emulators

>Where did old OP go?
No one knows. RIP in peace.

Have fun!

seems normal. I actually died once to richter the first time on my level 1 run because I was so used to killing him fast.

keep in mind that memorization will still make the game easy, regardless of the type of run you're going. even nude alucard's moveset can be too good in my opinion

Like a fool, I skipped this awesome game back in the day. Now I'm gonna play it until I cum blood.

Question: is the "holy symbol" a reference? Because it allows you to dive...

Regardless of how you feel about the games, you have to admit Castlevania has always had the best game titles.

– Rondo of Blood
– Bloodlines
– Symphony of the Night
– Legacy of Darkness
– Circle of the Moon
– Harmony of Dissonance
– Aria of Sorrow
– Lament of Innocence
– Portrait of Ruin
– Order of Ecclesia
– Encore of the Night
