Early video game, pinball and arcade history is extremely auteur driven, with said auteurs stereotypically being outsiders or counter culture kiddies with a desire to make something of a new and exciting frontier. So a level of weirdness is the norm, right up until arcades and consoles had the power that demanded bigger teams, coupled with the rise of marketing departments that hijacked publisher priority, and suddenly had the power to tell devs to make their games "less this and that, more like whatever unrelated product is selling".
