I think it's the influx of new people from the fantranslations and all the attention Goemon got, for good or bad, through the translation scandal.
I welcome new fans, but character design was always one of the things fans love about the series. If you came seeking serious business character design this might not be for you.

There's the Ganbare Goemon series, personally one of my favorites. On PS1 there's 2 of them that are 2D, Oedo Daikaiten which is an example of a classic Goemon game, and Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu, this one has more RPG/Zelda-ish parts so language barrier might a problem, neither of those are in english.

On N64 there's Goemon's Great Adventure which I personally think it's the best Goemon game, and it has 2.5D graphics.

But before you play any of those, I'd recommend you play the SNES games. The first one was localized in english as Legend of the Mystical Ninja, while Goemon 2, 3 and 4 were only released in Japan. Goemon 2 and 4 are playable without moon knowledge, 3 is more similar to Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu on PS1.

My first 3D console was the 3DO, followed by a PS1, and then some time after I got a N64 in 1996, yet I admit its library wasn't as bad as ignorant people on the internet make it out to be. In fact it has many of my favorite 5th gen games.

Why can't other anti-Nintendofags admit it?
