Mortal Kombat was banned when I was a kid. Somehow I was still aware of some of the characters, and thought Raiden was the coolest. Then I grew up, played the games, and found out he fucks up everything he gets involved in. Really disappointing.
I like Street Fighter more, anyway.

I was allowed to play Doom and Wolfenstein 3D for a time as a child, but they were eventually banned (found out years later my older brother could play them when I was asleep). The height of my teenage rebellion was playing the Doom shareware behind my parents' backs.
My parents always hated FPSs, but at least they let me install Jedi Knight. Played the hell out of that.

D&D was out for me, too. I figured it was satanic until I saw a game played when I was 13 and kept wondering, "Where's all the evil stuff they warned me about?"
Parents finally relented years later and even let me run a game at the house. Saw for themselves that it was just my friends and me being dorks.
