I get wanting a faithful experience but this is just tism at this point. People hated unlit screens even back when the Gameboy was still "current gen". The most popular accessories for them were lights just so people could see the damn things. It wasn't a stylistic choice, it was literally just a way to keep the budget down, and the most popular

If you went back to the year 1995 and said "Hey, would you rather have a fully lit LCD screen", 99% of people would say "oh fuck yes, please", and they'd call you a dipshit for saying "but aktshully, it's not authentic, Mario Land 2 wasn't meant to be well lit"
