Certainly do. GITS is one of my favorite games on the ps1.
Sony is disastrous at managing their in-house developers. They bought Exact (who were an innovative developer on the Sharp X68000 computer) and they did some good games for the PS1, which don't even get the recognition they deserve since Sony never did any marketing stunt for them (like they did for Crash Bandicoot).
In the end, Sony ended up cannibalizing Exact, splitting them up, and grabbing a few of their programmers for their Japan Studio. The result was that while some Exact members were still at Sony, the team work ethos wasn't there anymore so the 3rd Jumping Flash game (Robbit Mon Dieu) didn't come out as good as JF1 and 2, and then after that we never heard of another original game again from the Exact guys.
Really sad because it was a small but sweet developer with many good ideas for 3D gaming. Vanished.

>too bad the game was mediocre
What? It's one of the most original 3D action games ever made.
Did you remember to press both L and R at the same time to use the dash forward and backwards?

It's one of my favorite PS1 games, and yes it's made by Exact, same devs as Jumping Flash.
Sadly, Sony dissolved Exact, and separated the members throughout different teams within Sony's Japan Studio. A case of a nice small team of passionate devs being absorbed and cannibalized by a big corporation.
You can also try Geograph Seal if you can emulate Sharp X68000.
There's nothing quite like GITS anywhere though. But the way the lock-on system works reminds me of Panzer Dragoon a bit. Still not the same kind of game, even though GITS does have 2 on-rail levels.

it's weird though, anime was starting to be cool with the youth (remember back then anime was this cool cyberpunk thing, people didn't relate it to moe or "weebs", they related it to Akira and Ghost in the Shell).
The GITS movie had came out in 1995, and I'm pretty sure by 1997, when the game came out, it had become a cult classic in the west. HBO was broadcasting it.
It's just weird how Sony let THQ publish this, especially since Sony wanted that cool hip young adult audience that would be into something like GITS in the late 90s.

It came out in 1997, movie was 1995, but yeah it was based on the manga. AFAIK, this game has the only anime adaptation using the original manga designs.

Amazing game, lowkey one of the best on the PS.
As for "retro", the word "retro" doesn't have an official, golden rule definition, some sources say it's something that's 50 years old, sometimes more, while some other sources claim "retro" means "something that looks old". Etc.
For all intents and purposes, /vr/ is just the pre-2000 board. Arguing whether some games will "become" retro over time or not has never really got any consensus. It's simpler to just draw the line at 1999.

Anyone knows if there's a way to rip the music from the actual game disc?

OP here, by the way this thread is for any game in general, not just PlayStation games.

I didn't know it was that inflated. I bought it for like 20 bucks in 2010.
It's definitely worth a CD-R though.

Funny, because that other "not the same person" used these exact same words you've used, and it was also on a PS1 rec thread.

Anyway, apart from you and that "other" anon, I also came across many other people who also love GITS, so yeah, that's life, some people enjoy things, others don't. You are on the group that don't, big deal, right?

Love how you couldn't refute any of my counter-argument, too!

Nobody cares about your opinion, and PS2 is not retro.

OP, try the Ghost in the Shell game.
