Disagree with your take on repairs. The old consoles are very simple machines, and almost any ape with a soldiering iron and basic knowledge of what a capacitor is can do the work.
My local shop they do repairs right at the counter and will stop to use the register if necessary. Unless a specific part has to be ordered, most repairs are finished in a few minutes.
Granted, it’s far from their most profitable product, but it’s not nearly as much of a headache as you think.
One thing they also make decent money on is manuals, they have a wall of them and a huge discount bin. Pretty sure they get them for next to nothing.
