It took the foundation Street Fighter 2 laid and expanded on it in every way. Staple mechanics like EX specials, chain combos, guard cancels, air blocking and air dashing all came from it. It had a thriving competitive scene where legends like Daigo made names for themselves. It raised the bar for video game animation and proved that fighting games could work with themes other than marital arts. If there was ever a series that truly deserves more praise than it gets, it's Darkstalkers.

A while back i was thinking that the fall from grace of all these Japanese companies may be the fact that the Nintendo Wii came out and aligned "hardcore" players (Capcom's biggest market), that combined with the fact that the PlayStation3 was expensive to buy not to mention also expensive and hard to program it made difficult for Japanese companies to get any share of the market, also the market for the 360 was pretty much brah dudes who didn't care for Japanese games.

Morrigan's so much more popular because of the crossovers. Most of the people who know her don't know the first thing about the actual Darkstalkers series. I'm saying things could have gone differently.

There is no canon ending. It's a cliffhanger. We don't know what the hell happened. For their fighting game series, Capcom usually doesn't decide how the events of a game turned out until they make its sequel. And of course that never happened after DS3.
