honestly, I replayed the original Doom 3 recently and I never had to use the flashlight in combat, only for finding my way around maps. Enemies are really loud, and have glowy bits on them that make them impossible to miss. Maybe its because I was running at a modern resolution, those zombie eyes could be hard to see on lower res settings.
