It's the deleted plotlines that never made it into the games that are the most grim. I'm not sure if the great Motavian massacre is canon or not, but the gist of it at some time between PS1 and PS2 the invading Palmans use their robot cops to genocide the native furballs.

I'd only recommend playing them if you're really thirsty for more from the phranchise and then only after you're done with the main series. They really present a very different version of the world of PS2 and don't fit very well in continuity. (are we to accept Motavia went from a desert wasteland in Eusis' Adventure to terraformed paradise in PS2 within 6 months?) They work best when PS2 is NOT fresh in your mind.

If you're playing on emulator then I'd gor for the 'retranslation'. It's not a complete retranslation, but it adds some stuff that was left out of the original and makes naming consistent with the other games, so it is a slight but noticable improvement.

But it does not work on real hardware, and unlike PS1s high quality retranslation, is not worth chosing emulation over hardware just to play it. But yes, if emulation there is no reason not to go for it.

If you're a bad enough dude, yes. If you just want an easy to get into RPG then PS4 will accomidate.
