I suddenly remember that I once read an interesting article about this character: https://www.atlantamagazine.com/great-reads/what-is-it-oral-history-izzy-atlanta-olympics/

It's weird that the original design was LESS ugly, and then they faced a backlash and gave it a stupid nose and a dopier mouth. Or maybe the mouth came before the public unveiling? Oh well. It was terrible at all times, evidently. But apparently some kids liked it.
