physical, but I got the japanese version a while back, working my way through. I might not bother with the console games, even though I like the Sega Genesis ver of Darius II.

I would probably recommend just the arcade package if you had to choose. I did get one game on the japanese eshop; it wasn't hard to switch my account back and forth between Japanese (to buy it) and then back to US.

Another pretty decent eshop shmup is Sisters Royale, but not retro.

have you checked out some gameplay footage on youtube? They might give you some good pointers. I pick J-B5th myself, and a benefit of that is having the tank as the first boss where I can mindless x16 the whole thing to death.
I'm sure you destroy all the legs first to get them out of your hair, right?
