The classics have perspicuously surrealist fantasy environments that are pulchritudinous and iconic. This is lost in Nouveau Sonic’s salmagundi of cityscapes, realistic textures, and environments denuded of idiosyncrasy. Green Hill would not possess a superior presentation if you reconstituted the checkered ground with an HD dirt texture.

Manual doesn't say shit about it but it made it into some game guides. It's the sort of oversight that happens when you know the engine inside and out and forget other people don't, if I had to guess I'd imagine there were a lot more up/down barrels in the stage scrapped during development and the designer simply forgot it wasn't made clear.
