Anybody else feel like this is a step down from the first game? The graphics are nicer, but the music is nowhere near as good and the game just feels slower and more about wandering around these vast but kinda empty levels instead of the tight, action-packed platforming of the first game. Since you can do the worlds in any order there's not a proper difficulty curve either.

It's better than SMB1 at least, and for its time it was kind of revolutionary. I probably prefer SMW but I'm biased since I grew up with SMW. Pic related is still my favorite 2D Mario, though

I'm a bit biased, I grew up with World and a lot of SMB3's elements are still very foreign to me, so I kind of prefer World I guess. But my true favorite 2D Mario is Super Mario Land 2, it's like a streamlined version of World with more fun and variety. Best of all, it's portable.

Nobody seems to like Super Mario Land 2, but I actually think its a really good game

I wouldn't call it soulful but for some reason I wanted to try out the Mario Gameboy games, 1st one was easy but cool, second one even easier then that last castle completely reversed the difficulty, what the H.

I didn't know this is where the Wario series came from, how hard are those. Also yay or nay on full color romhacks.

Super Mario Land 2 was a much better episode than I thought it would be, and a much better game. I dismissed GB Mario games as inferior to 3 and World as a kid and never played them.

Instead they knew full well that they couldn't compete directly with the console games, so they did something unique and played to their strengths and added new gimmicks. It feels so different it feels like a new game series. And at least 2 it's not momentum based so Arino doesn't seem to have problems.

And having Wario use all of mario's powers in a final battle makes it one of the best final confrontations in a Mario game by far.

This is the ideal Super Mario game.

This game is an improvement in nearly every way over Super Mario Land except one: the soundtrack. Good God, these tunes are horrid.

To my knowledge Mario Land 2 was the only Mario game produced by Gunpei Yokoi, which is why it's got a rather distinct feel from other Mario games and is all around awesome. It's everything I could have wanted from a Super Mario game on Gameboy.

Why is Super Mario Land 2 never brought up in regards to best Mario games discussion? It's a fantastic game and it has some of the most unique, imaginative worlds and ideas in the entire series.

What do you think of this game? I've seen people refer to it as the most underrated Mario game, and I've even heard of people calling it one of the best Mario games.
