i agree, snes fe is kinda the peak. the post-kaga games are a big regression in mechanics and story telling. FE6 to FE9 are still fun to play, just dull. the (not retro) newest game and conquest are difficult and introduce a lot of cool gameplay mechanics but the stories are terrible

Give the originals a try. The DS remake adds a bunch of chapters to the beginning, where you get the choice of killing Jeigan or Frey. In the original, you just have Jeigan.

It's nice and straight forward, no clutter. It's more simple than it's competitors (Ethlead, Guyflame), but a good game in its own right.

Gaiden is fun too, but you can grind and make it super easy (like DQ, FF, or Shining Force).
