This game is great and I've seen a lot of fans who consider this the best in the series.

From the PS1 era,definitely. Somehow they another team had more time but kinda fucked up with 3 and 4.

Don't remember the next entries. So is it true?

This reminded me, it's really weird how Far Cry started off with this science fiction twist with the giant Serious Sam tier mutants in the first game, only to immediately drop it with future installments with more "realistic" settings and backstories. >Not retro, but it's similar to how Uncharted kinda started off with paranormal shit with the weird zombie things in 1, and the superhuman guardian dudes at the end of Shambhala in 2, only for the rest of the games to have a more, again, "realistic" approach.

You don't have to be scared of new things you know; it looks fine. I'm not a fan of the GUI personally, and I'd prefer a centered gun, but I do quite like the lighting.

I never found it tedious at any point, if that makes you feel better.

I'm a big fan of atmospheric maps, and that's what FCFF has.
static.wire is also atmospheric, if you haven't played it. Really short, but really fun. It has a sequel called static.air that has too many slaughter areas for my liking, but is way more aesthetically pleasing.

Really do give FCFF a shot, though, if you haven't.
