Kishimoto originally planned a much longer ending for DD2AC, but his supervisors told him to make it shorter so that it wouldn't consume too much play time (long cutscenes in an arcade game means less time people actually playing the game, which translates to less income), so he decided on a photograph of the Lee brothers and Marian before her death. It is crudely drawn, but I think it fits with the theme of revenge. Willy's defeated but Marian's still gone and nothing is going to change that.

The NES version doesn't quite pull the Revenge theme right. The Shadowmaster, unlike Machinegun Willy (who was an established antagonist retaliating from a prior defeat), is just some FotNS reject who doesn't even show up until the last stage, and Marian just wakes up in the end like a princess under a sleeping spell, which basically turns the entire game into another rescue mission.

They're both good in their own ways though. DD2AC felt a lot darker to me, but DD2NES had more variety in level designs and a better final showdown.

>Power Rangers (SNES) came out after Ninja Warriors Again (SNES) and is something of a spiritual successor, both being made by Natsume and having similar gameplay, but why is Power Rangers such a massive downgrade?
Probably because of the source material. I doubt they had much creative liberty in a show about palette-swapped spandex heroes. It's a shame they didn't at least gave the female rangers different sprites.

>Best beat-'em-up weapon
The baseball from Double Dragon

>Best 3 arcade beat-'em-ups
The Punisher
Violent Storm
Undercover Cops (Japan/Alpha Renewal version)
Gaiapolis also deserves an honorable mention, even though it's not really a belt-scroller.

>Best 3 console beat-'em-ups
Double Dragon Advance
Mighty Final Fight
Bare Knuckle 3

>Beat-'em-up guilty pleasures
The Adventures of Bayou Billy
Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone (arcade)

>what do you think were some missed opportunities for the genre during the height it reached in the arcade/SNES/MegaDrive days?
Technos should've made a true Double Dragon sequel to the Neo-Geo instead of that Street Fighter clone based on the movie.
