Doom and Duke 3D are among my most cherished games of all, with Doom happening to be my most favorite. Even if I like Doom more, I love Duke 3D so much, that if it somehow were to disappear from the world, I would be absolutely beside myself with sorrow over the loss.

It's largely a taste thing, I just like the straight laced tone, along with the heavy metal, occult themes, and horror movie stuff Doom has more (along with its infinite modding scene), but looking at Duke, there's really a lot that it has which Doom doesn't.
Duke actually has a straight laced tone, but it's also lined with a much less serious tone and a cheeky sense of humor that's unbelievably charming (particularly because of Duke Nukem's extreme personality), and the gameplay and level design sets itself apart a lot, the game is actually pretty different from Doom in a lot of key ways, and I think that's a good thing, I think it would actually be really boring if it was just a close copy instead.
The only thing I can really criticize DN3D for is that it doesn't have as great of a bestiary as Doom 2 does, and it has no monster infighting (a feature which I think is unbelievably fun), but it doesn't make the game even remotely bad.

Duke Nukem 3D always puts a big grin on my face.

I would actually say that Duke Nukem IS a parody, it's just that he's a very affectionate one, it's clear that the creators love what they're parodying and that Duke is genuinely supposed to be a cool character (which he also is), and at the same time a comedic one.

His personality, and the various Easter Eggs, are an intentional juxtaposition towards DN3Ds many dark and gloomy themes and detail (mass murder, horror, rape), he's the ridiculous self-absorbed asshole which contrasts, and makes sure the bleak themes aren't overbearing. He's a genuine macho badass action hero which you're confident will persevere and win against the evil aliens, so even if you laugh at him for admiring himself in the mirror and being so pleased with himself, you love him because he isn't some weak dipshit just filled with hot air, he's strong, capable, and can absolutely fucking do this, he can end the darkness.

The way he rips off the head from the Overlord and then literally sits down to take a shit down his neck (as he promised when the fight began), reading the news and whistling his own theme, is absolutely fucking ridiculous, and yet also completely badass. It's a perfect encapsulation of his character.

Get raped, Duke Nukem 3D has lots and lots of really good music in it, it's as much a part of the charm of the game as the music is for Doom, it kills a lot of the atmosphere and feel of the game to not have it.

Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior all kinda do it a little bit like that, not as exaggerated, but when you blow enemies up, gore and severed limbs go goddamn flying.

Y'know, I really just love how Duke Nukem 3D balances the absurd machismo and raunchy humor, together with a grim and gritty action adventure.
You laugh at Duke's ego and the excesses you see in the game, but playing as this over the top superhero, who aside from being ridiculous is also legit badass, you're more than ready to face off all these horrors.

What's happening to all these women is horrible, and earth is a dark and depressing shithole, but don't worry, a man who's seriously called Duke fucking Nukem is going to save the day and literally take a shit down an alien overlord's severed neckstump.

Others are stronger in some areas, but Duke manages to be very consistent across the board IMO. Also, Duke is just really lovable, he's a dumb asshole, but also a wisecracking badass, he's an excellent hero and the icing on the cake that is his game.

I will laugh at Duke's bloated ego, but I will also admire his macho, his strength, and his juvenile sense of humor.

There's more strafing than circle strafing. Lrn2strafe in tight quarters, man.
Hell, there's lots of walls, pillars and objects to dash for cover behind, you're supposed to use those, as well as using various chokepoints.

True, in that many of the early level drafts were more closely inspired by realistic military bases, and done in a way that wasn't interesting. The early draft levels of Doom are boxy and lack a lot of interesting features, and they're also not really anything like Duke levels, because most of them lack complexity.

A few of the early draft levels were retooled into more interesting and abstract ones, like E2M2, E2M4, E2M5, E2M7, and Doom 2 Map 10, which in my opinion are among the stronger levels of the original games. They're not like Duke Nukem levels, but they mix some quasi realistic elements with some very fantastical and strange elements, which makes them so much fun.

The combat is very dynamic, it's far faster and intense than any of the standard Doom or Doom 2 levels. Just like Doom, each monster fills their own role.

Duke likes to put you in a frying pan, where you fight your way into another frying pan. E3L4 keeps putting you in challenging fights after challenging fights, you think you've cleared the streets and ledges but there's more monsters each time, and you need to act quick to not be cornered or gunned down.
