I wouldn't say it was ahead of it's time, I'd say it was exactly in its time - after Wolf3D and before Quake. First System Shock would be a much better example, that or Gun Buster - which is first FPS that let you freely aim using "twin stick" control scheme (with separate controls for moving and aiming), released in arcades like two months after Wolf3D, and years before Quake when separate controls for aiming and walking would become standard (mind you, it wasn't exactly mouselook - you were basically playing Wolf, and used a light gun to shoot anywhere within what you were seeing on screen - so kind of like a cross between a Wolf3D clone with a light gun shooter, that allowed you to freely choose your viewpoint).

Oh, and it also had fully texture mapped walls and ceilings, and animated sky textures - a year before Doom.
