Playstation games shouldn't really have used textures much. The hardware doesn't really support them well and it looks awful 95% of the time.

tl;dr - Texturing is overlaying a separate image onto a model, vertex coloring adds color values to the vertices of the model itself which uses less memory and was much more common in older games. Pic related is FF7.

I think the 3d models in this game are legit good and am glad they didn't texture them. It is a more aesthetically pleasing game than the other 2 on the console.

pretty much. I'll say that I like some of the 3d models in FF7, and I mean it, but if the game didn't have all those pre-rendered graphics everywhere, It'd be a fugly game.

Likewise, I enjoy Unreal and Turok 2 because they are really comfy shooters, but if the music were removed, the graphics would have to carry all that atmosphere, and they likely couldn't.

The best that can be said about pre-2003 3d is that it is "functional".
