The DKC trilogy looks nicer but what Toy Story accomplished was incredible. At the time it really did feel like you were playing the movie

NES games do it, but it's limited. Ninja Gaiden and MM6 have it, but the layers never overlap because it's just one background layer being sheared. Like in >>4565217. Toy Story does it for the floor, though. Metal Storm and Battletoads fake it by animating certain background tiles to look like they're moving relative to the player.

The easy way to do Toy Story's backgrounds would be to to layer dozens of backgrounds/sprites on top of each other like in Sega's Super Scaler games, but the Genesis only has 2 layers to work with. The game is doing something more complex.

I've also never been able to figure out how it did the giant kids running around the Pizza Planet level. It's not just a giant sprite, or at least that's the impression I get from the solid color pants.
