/vr/ - Retro Games

So, the only Sonic the Hedgehog games I've played are Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle on Gamecube. I've never played any of the 2d, classic (and highly praised) Sonic games. I had a SNES growing up - missed out, it seems. Never got any of the collection games or GBA titles.

Which ones are must plays? Skippable ones? Must avoids? I was tempted to just play 1, 2, then 3 but there's the GBA ones and Sonic CD (what is that?) and then there's Sonic 4, episode 1 and 2 (and 3 maybe?) and then Sonic Mania is coming out on PC too and it being highly praised, so I'd like to give it a try.

Any advice starting my adventures with Sonic the Hedgehod, dudes?

What are some essentials + gems for this console? I don't have as much knowledge in this library as I do others.

I've stayed away from it since people throw around that it SUXXXX
but i already beat sonic 1-3&K and now I need more SONIC

Sup /vr/? I dreamt with a song some days ago and I was finally able to make it out on Guitar Pro. I'm sure my mind didn't make it up while I was sleeping so I asked around with some of my friends and a lot of them said they recalled it from some retro game and some even pointed specifically towards the Sonic saga but none of them can remember what level it's from.
