Because of the depseration of Sony's competitors they all put out valiant efforts at least. There was simply no stopping Sony with the momentum they had, though. The PS2 was the technological leap forward customers expected while also launching at the same price as the PS1, which in 2000 was still perfectly reasonable. Add to that the fact that it could play DVD at the peak of DVD's adoption rate, and nothing was going to stop it.

If a company "wins" a generation all they have to do is not fuck up, and make measured reactions to their competition. Nintendo failed to react to Sega and Sony which is why they lost momentum with the SNES, N64 and Gamecube. Sega fucked up with the 32X and Saturn so they had no momentum going into the Dreamcast. Sony played all their cards perfectly with the PS1 and PS2 though, and it wasn't until the PS3 that they had a real fuck up.

The 6th gen is still hands down the best console generation though. The one and only time that you had consoles from Nintendo, Sega, Playstation and Xbox all out in the wild at once. Even though the Dreamcast was on the clearance shelf by the time the rest of the competition was in play it still had new retail games in stores for a while. It was a lineup that we'll never see again but what a lineup it was.

Why did all 6th gen consoles use DVD drive? Wouldn't it be better if they stayed with CD drives to keep the cost low and used the remaining money to give themselves an expandable hard drive to install your games on? No loading time and DVD drive failure due to wear.

Why do you think that platform games started to decline so quickly during the sixth gen? I feel like Banjo represented the peak of the genre’s popularity, and things started heading downhill with Banjo Tooie.

Even some of the big platformers from the 6th generation like Ratchet and Clank focus more on gunplay than on platforming. Old franchises like Spyro and Crash, either declined in popularity and quality or disappreared completly. Mario is the only one of the old platformers that’s remained both successful and critically acclaimed.

What happened bros? What’s become of the scotformer? And why was 6th gen the beginning of the end?

Now that the retro title has rightfully been given to the 6th generation consoles, please take all classic gaming (games released prior to 1999) discussion to /v/ as those are now off topic here in /vr/. Thank you.

>PS2 launch is now closer to the launch of the NES than it is to us in the year 2020.

With the OG Xbox and Gamecube not too far off achieving that same milestone. It's about time we allowed discussion of gen 6 consoles and games here. I'll start...

Enough is enough. We all know ps2 is retro at this point. There is not a fixed date fof "retro". It moves as time moves. Just because (You) are an oldfag who still feels like the year 2000 was the last monday doesnt justify this.

Will these lovely lads be considered /vr/ in the new decade? The tech is definitely old enough where the collector's value is much higher than the average consumer's value
