I think the HD ones were AI upscaled, but I usually use Mario Wiki

That's an easy one. DKC uses prerendered sprites while DK64 uses polygons on early 3D hardware. Sort of like comparing Super Mario RPG to Super Mario 64. I'd even argue SNES games looked better than N64 in general since it was so much better at handling 2D than the N64 was at handling 3D.

DKC1 has atmosphere, but DKC2 has more of an edge. The enemies look tougher and Crocodile Isle more foreboding than DK Isle. DKC2 was really the culmination of all of the cool stuff Rare wanted to do in DKC1 mixed with a bunch of other wacky ideas to make a really fun and exciting game.

Pretty much if you like the more atmospheric elements and faster gameplay you're going to enjoy DKC1 more, but if you like the darker/more epic tone and bigger worlds you're going to enjoy DKC2 more. DKC3 has a little of both.

Yeah, that's the same way I feel about the DKC trilogy and Mega Man X. No matter how many times I play them they almost never get old, especially DKC2. There's also a lot of interesting Super Famicom Japan exclusives out there, maybe not quite as many as PCE or Saturn but there's still a decent amount.

Crash Bandicoot comes close, but I still prefer DKC. Something about the movement and level design just feels smoother and better thought out to me. Plus I guess I'm biased since I played the DKC games first. DKC2 remains my favorite SNES game and probably my favorite Nintendo game in general. It's just a fantastic package.

>(at the time, I was still pretty much a 2D only game player).
Sounds like me right now. Have you tried the Donkey Kong Land games? Honestly if you find the game boring it might be best to just play those and/or skip to DKCR. The waggle is annoying but it is a LOT faster, like DKC1 on steroids. It's significantly more difficult though, especially the mine and rocket barrel stages. DK64 is honestly more like a spinoff in places, it's basically just Banjo with monkeys in it. At the time I didn't mind but in hindsight I can see why it would be disappointing if you enjoyed the DKC games. DKCR also retains the goofy tone of Banjo and DK64 but brings back the old school 2D gameplay. And no Kremlings for some reason.

Honestly there is no wrong way to play the DKC games, I've seen plenty of Any% runs on Twitch that use the warp barrels and other warps for a quick and easy clear, but there's also a nice rewarding feeling to completing the games all the way through, just takes a bit of patience, but finding all of the secrets can be a very fun experience.

Back then GameFAQs, nowadays you can just YouTube it. Some of the stuff is really well-hidden like the notorious three bonus stages in Orangutan Gang, the bonus stage within a bonus stage in Oil Drum Alley, and one of the DK Coins in one of the castle stages in DKC2 iirc that most would never guess (hidden behind a wall), but a lot of them you can just find on your own.

I always wanted a DKC game (old or new) in the art style of the original renders but redone in high resolution, similar to the treatment N. Sane Trilogy got. Banjo has also been begging for a remake in this style for about twenty years

>Remember playing Rayman at cousin's house and loving it
>Downloaded it on psp in high school
"fuck this game, I didn't like it at all"
>Gave it another try last summer
It's pretty great actually, just stupidly hard.

Let's be real though, best platformer is pic related and we all know it

I never understood the "DKC2 is impossible" meme. Maybe it's because I played it as a kid, but I always thought this game was pretty easy.

While I think the DKC trilogy is overall a bit overrated, the second entry is easily one of my favorite games of all time, and one of the finest platformers in existence. However, if I were to criticize one element of the game, it's that it's too easy. I always have 99 lives around world 3, and I can usually 102% it in about three hours.

What particular parts of it do you find so hard, OP?
