I've always been more into standalone emulators too, but switched to RetroArch a couple of years back, it's certainly not for everyone and I get why many dislike it, even if I think sometimes the hate it gets here can be quite exaggerated... the thing that settled it for me was that having it all on this single place is nice, especially for convenience of global settings among what I play, it's just great.

It's got a few cores that only exist in RetroArch I love using too, like the Genesis Plus GX Wide, it's sort of inevitable that I'd use RetroArch just for a chance to use it. One more thing, I love the XMB.

I'm glad you're enjoying your new front end, OP! I personally prefer RetroArch's XBM, it's just nice and sleek, and I liked this UI on both PSP and PS3 back when they were new, it always felt modern and sylish, while also being relatively easy to use and intuitive. I really like the Pegasus front end too, due to how many options it gives the user, it just looks more difficult to set up and I'm lazy.

I think that what makes emulation so good is the fact that, while we can talk about what this ideal setup would be like, it's so simple for a setup for emulation to be good and just work. It's likely we all have at least a single TV in our homes, even if it isn't a CRT, we're good to go, we have shaders afterall. It's likely we all have a PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone, often we have at least a couple in our homes, and again we're good to go. ROMs or emulators are free and easy to find, shaders also are quite simple, and free, I'd say the main thing I spend money on now for my setup is controllers.

I was always a standalone emulator fan, but after I used RetroArch for my smartphone, since it wasn't easy to find my favorites on mobile... I loved it, and decided to try out on PC, and it's been working quite well for me. It's just so convenient, you have all of your emulators and ROMs in one place, seamlessly going from library to library, all in that lovely PS3 XMB which I'm a huge fan of, with many settings to make it perfect for me, which I only have to set once and it works for all cores. I get why some might prefer standalone, but I'll never get the hate it gets...
