A sport is fundamentally a game, and watching other people play, especially at a high level, has been common for centuries, add a few elements of tribalism in there and you have sports as we know them today... you know how most people turn into hardcore nationalists when there's a little tension with other countries, even if they hate their current governments, and especially during wars? It's all in our nature, and football, alongside other sports, scratches that itch, but without any killing, there's also the matter that to many it's a passion they associate with their parents, mostly fathers, who took them to see the local team and cheer for it, so it becomes special... in short, people that love football, and other sports, are really passionate about it, they often watch it, play it, read about it, talk about it among other things... it's no wonder sports video games are also something people become truly passionate about, and when people are like that, they keep buying it even if the quality they grew up with is no longer there. As a football fan, I can safely say that between PES1 and PES6, and then FIFA08 to FIFA16, we saw genuine improvements in the genre every year, so spending the money felt fair... now though? EA Sports FC and eFootball are both a disgrace to the sport.
