Playing Doom for the first time, somehow I kept thinking I'd played it but that was Doom 2.
I started on ultra violence and the game is a lot nicer than I was expecting. it's very generous with health, armor and ammo compared to Duke 3D.
the monster closet bonanza and room with flickering lights and invisible demons at the end of Phobos Lab got a bit rough.
the lack of vertical aim keeps throwing me for a loop.
I know this is from 1993 but the whole "demons invade a mars colony" thing is really neat. Is there any actual story/lore?

Seriously WHAT THE FUCK
I don't know what I'm even intended to do here, there is NOWHERE TO HIDE. If I try rushing through then monsters teleporter BEHIND me including a fucking ARCHVILE IN A NARROW CORRIDOR WHERE THERE IS NOWHERE TO HIDE. I can't try to slowly take out enemies because THERE IS A HIDDEN ARCHVILE THAT KEEPS REVIVING THE CHAINGUNNERS I KILL, not that killing them is a good idea because as mentioned THERE IS NOWHERE TO HIDE.

I grew up with SOTN and GBA Metroidvanias but wasn't until recently I went back and played Castlevania 1 and I dug it. It's short and concise but it holds up and is really fun.
Playing Rondo of Blood now.

So this might be a stupid question but here goes:

Can a KB+M 2D top down shooter work if it's designed like Doom (going from A to B, shooting enemies, finding secrets and powerups)?
Afterall Doom's game design was inspired by top down shooters like Smash TV and dungeon crawlers for level design so it's a no-brainer, but something tells me it's not that simple.

After playing Doom Complex+LCA on my own for a week straight, I've come to the conclusion that LCA is overtoned, you're having tons of fun killing tons of stuff with some great pacing then all of sudden the music changes and along comes this dude with a shitload of HP/armor out of nowhere who is able to 1-shoot you, if he doesn't right away prepare to play a game of cat and mouse for the next 5-15 minutes depending on how well armed you are, and if you win you can also lose because that old and fun pacing might be all screwed because of those overpowered items they drop.

I can't speak for the other mods but I can only imagine it gets considerably worse, however it feels like all this shit would be more fun on coop servers and whatnot than it is on single-player, which I don't think it was the intended mode to play in the first place anyways.

I think I'll stick to plain CD when on my own.
