Giving him an actual name (It's Stan Blazkowicz in Doom II RPG but it's not 100% clear if it's supposed to be THE Doomguy or a different descendant of BJ.

I think giving him a name takes away from it, I like him being a nameless marine, Doomguy. However, I also consider him to be his own character and not me. The man pictured is Doomguy, a descendant of BJ Blazkowicz, the lone survivor of the Phobos incident in 2012 (the year Doom 1 is set in) and had all his subsequent adventures in the sequels. He is his own guy. Doomguy.

In hindsight, is it fair to say that Doom was a revolutionary game which pushed the frontiers of what was possible with gaming while Myst was a walking simulator for casual gamers that was quickly forgotten except as a snobbish example of what people who don't like video games wish Doom was like?

And I use the term walking simulator loosely because Myst plays like a passive aggressive slideshow simulator that's too high strung to even play as a normal point and click game while being too far up it's own ass to have any cleverness.
