I think a lot about what makes retro, retro. Continuing to play outdated hardware is definitely "Retro" but, the game design of things from the Xbox 360 and prior generations is so much different, too.

Up to the PS2, maybe even Xbox 360, games were just advanced enough to still be fun without being over done.

Graphics were really solid and we weren't blinded by photo realism yet and could enjoy them and not say "I've seen better."

Enough to do to never get bored, but also not so crowded that it's a chore (a couple of tasks, maybe a couple of achievements, that was about it, an entire game could last 10-15 hours and not just be cutscenes).

No real bloated DLC to bother with, no lootboxes or pay-to-win mechanics.

You could play it all offline on a disc. It was the perfect balance between the "blueprint" games that came before and the overly stuffed and often still rushed games we see today.

I'm tired of people who said the Dreamcast flopped/didn't sell well. If Sega had more money the system could have survived longer and continued to sell fine.

It managed 9.5 million units in 2.5 years. That's almost 5 million units a year, give or take, and would have put it on track to match the Sega Genesis in 5 or 6 years time.

Can anyone explain why the Dreamcast is defined as a "Retro" style console, but the Gamecube isn't?

Theoretically the Gamecube actually has less modern features than the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast even started true DLC

I want to play my original consoles but I'm tired of dealing with scart.

I managed to snag an HDMI NES, HDMI N64, and HDMI Gamecube, as well as the connections for HDMI for Dreamcast.

But I don't want to deal with scart or component for Genesis or other older consoles. I can't find any good component converters.

What can I do?

Why is the Gamecube not considered retro when the Dreamcast is? Is it because Dreamcast was the last console with arcade ports?

Dreamcast is actually an incredibly modern console. Dreamcast actually had DLC and a large internet userbase with a web browser. Seganet was actually the precursor to Xbox live in many ways.

Features wise, GameCube is less modern than Dreamcast by far.
