There are definite similarities in design philosophy - both tend towards loading the player up with lots of gear to choose from, then giving them combat problems to solve however they see fit. Inventory and resource management are involved, but mostly as a long-term concern rather than constantly playing inventory tetris every time you find something new. HD has a lot more depth to its mechanics - even the "respawning" mentioned by >>9167782 abides by strict rules and you can play against it if you know how - but that's to be expected from a gameplay mod that's been in development for fifteen years.
