Actual, unironic reason? It was too big for its time. Like people joke about XBOX HUEG but have you ever actually looked at one lately, you could kill a man with that thing, it was almost the size of a PS3 in a time when people weren't used to consoles being big yet. And Japanese homes are small. And more importantly, it's kinda ugly and it cannot be understated how much Japan values aesthetics. They like small, compact things.
