It is actually Tezuka who probably went the kiddy route for Yoshi. He completely sold out and Miyamoto even calls this out in an interview. Marketing heads really desperately wanted a young children's mascot to sell baby games with. Look up the marketing campaign for Yoshi's Story, they spent so much money on the marketing, and made sure it was advertised on kid's cable channels, and a contest too. I hope Tezuka is happy, I hope he thought it was worth it, mutating Yoshi into a gargling gremlin-limbed toy.
