Hi anons!

I just saw that there's no dosbox thread here... So I decided to make one!

What games does /vr/ play on dosbox?

/DOOM/ If you want to play your favorite retro FPS games in DOS then download this pack >>6685207

Here is an example playthrough of Duke 3D episode one performed in DOSBox; this is the greatest Duke Nukem video on youtube and what got me interested in DOS gaming in the first place:
https://youtu.be/4rSGPiNqbg0
He plays with autoaim and no vertical mouse look, just like I remember playing it

I admit that Chocolate and Crispy Doom are superior options to the DOSPack for Doom, as they don't stretch the screen horizontally. Same with Mark V's WinQuake executable for Quake. These ports can give you software rendering with the 320x200 or 640x400 look without stretching and also come with widescreen rendering (except for Chocolate Doom) so you can get the pixelated resolution and fill out your widescreen monitor.

However, when it comes to Duke 3D, none of the ports are able to replicate the DOS experience. BuildGDX can open in 640x400 with software rendering but the MIDI player options are limited to port MIDI or Gervill; no OPL emulation nor Soundblaster. And EDuke32/Rednukem have OPL3 emulation (similar to SoundBlaster) but don't even have 640x400 resolution

The One Unit Whole Blood download in the OP is virtually the same as the build in the DOSPack except OUWB will also play the videos that come with the game, and the DOSPack has the sweet DOS MIDI sound. You need to change the configuration files for OUWB to remove the CD audio and play the original MIDIs. Open "dosboxblood_single.conf" and add the "-nocd" parameter to the end of "blood.exe." It will look like this:
"blood.exe -nocd"
Then open "BLOOD.CFG," find "MusicDevice = 7," and change that number to 0. Use 7 if you want to use your port MIDI like VMS, or 0 if you want the original DOS Soundblaster sound.
Just an FYI: for whatever reason, OUWB plays normally in 800x600 and if you try to open it in 640x400, the video gets messed up, whereas Blood opened up in the DOSPack will play in 640x400 no problem.

Hello there. I just got DOSBox and IM attempting to load Turrican II but I keep running into errors with loading the software. When I attempt to run the executable I'm given a game with corrupted spirteworks and no sound. What could I be doing wrong?

So I discovered something that might help people trying to play Blood.

Apparently, "cycles=max" doesn't mean cycles are maxed out. It seems dosbox has some rate limiting logic that will actually slow it down when played on a very fast core.

I noticed my own CPU was only using 50% of one core when cycles were set to max. When I manually set the cycles in dosbox.conf, I was able to boost core usage to 100% and double my frame rate.

The key is to find a sweet spot where your cpu is fully used but before where it starts causing skips and audio dropouts. You can use Ctrl + F11 / F12 to bump the cycles down and up while playing.

For me on a Pentium G this was about 375,000 cycles.

I'm on linux so I'm not completely sure windows users will benefit from this, but it seems to come up enough that ti's worth trying. Particularly for people who can see their DosBox isn't using a full core.

Also, you can type "t" and then "rate" to check your frame rate.

Okay I usually come into these threads with my $20 X-Play/$200 Shield/$2000 Edge posts but today I wanted to share something I just discovered but didn't want to start a new thread about.

I don't have a Razr Edge despite posting it all the time. I have a much less expensive 10"Windows 8 tablet and now there's an even cheaper 7" one, like ~$100.

However, I rarely use the tablet for retro gaming since there isn't a good latch-on controller for Windows AND when it comes to retro PC gaming, touch screen mapping is EXTREMELY hit and miss (mostly miss)

Well, I was having another go at using ScummVM on it since I was looking for a slightly more cinematic experience than using my phone and I ran straight back into that old problem but I discovered some guy successfully created an SDL.DLL that actually works correctly with Windows 8 touch screens, although it's double-tap-to-click isn't exactly ideal. It's kind of a hack to set up. If there's enough interest I'll probably Anonymously compile an installer for DOSbox and ScummVM that includes it but honestly I have no idea how many Anons have been trying to do retro PC emulation on Windows 8 touch screen. Anyway, I found it through his YouTube video which has a link to the file and the source. If some Anon with programming skills were to change it to single-tap-to-click and recompile it that'd just be tits.

Hey /vr/ what do you consider to be the best abandonware game(s)?

Pic related, not limited to dos games though.

Been trying to get into SimCity 2000 Special Edition lately, I've had it since forever on GoG but only just installed it and giving it a whirl now, unfortunately it runs like crap especially in big thick cities, and also sounds like it too, are there any tweaks I can change in the DOSBox config like in the CPU settings and/or sound settings section to help remedy this, or maybe there is a custom DOSBox people recommend for it, as it uses an ancient 0.73 version of DOSBox. Basically anyone mind sharing what there config file is.

thought this might be a good idea for us looking for some game recommendations and trying to run older games on modern PC's and having some difficulty,

just put put Dosbox on my new laptop and trying to run MDK with difficulty, been through all the configuration settings and changed around a lot according to different guides online, but the game chugs along in full screen but plays perfectly in windowed mode really bizzare if anyone does have a solution to my problem it would be much appriciated.
