Well, the most complete mecha game I've ever played is without any doubt Gunparade March. The only problem is that it's just too complex, it has so many stuff to take care of, your character goes to school, interacts with other characters kinda like Persona, builds up relationships that will help in the battlefield. The game also has an anime and spawned some sequels on PS2.

Gunparade March, this game has so many mechanics... it's like the tutorial never ends. In short it's something like Persona meets Front Mission, during the school days you'll have to talk with different characters, go to class, etc.. But there are also missions you must clear in some points of the game with mechas, because the earth is under attack by an alien race. The mechas are customizable, changing weapons, etc. The relationships with the different characters in school will also affect their performance in the battlefield.

Gunparade March.

This is an SRPG mixed with some simulation mechanics that could be compared with Persona 3. It's really complex, you can unlock different skills by having better relationships with some characters, there are romantic relationships too, but it doesnt end there, you can customize your mecha... is like the tutorial never ends...
