100% this. There's no 'normal' or balanced way to play. You'll either blast through the game effortlessly by abusing its many systems or you'll do pea shooter damage and suffer your way through long-ass battles and have a horrible time. FFVIII's challenge isn't about challenge per se, it's all about dodging lethargic misery and patting yourself on the back for it.
