Alternative Legend of Zelda map, I assume from the manual

Do you consider using this map cheating? It came with the game, but i've heard it was labeled as a sort of last resort. Other than naming the dungeons, it does give away plenty secrets.

It's only difficult to figure out the spot if you don't have any map, but even the one that came with the game suffice.

You don't recall correctly. Gave you the first four as well as locations of the Lost Woods, the location of the Bracelet, the location of the Blue Ring, and even the location of one of the hidden Heart or Potion guys. All but 30 screens are shown.

Image related is the one I had in mind.
If that's not the one that came with the game, where does it originate from?

Pic related came with every copy of Zelda 1. It's a map, that's 80% filled in for you, along with markers showing you the important secrets on each screen. You have to draw the rest and fill in the blanks based on the hints given to you in-game.

It also came with complete maps for the first two dungeons, tips for all the rest (including bombing walls to find secret paths, pushing blocks to uncover stairwells, and how to get past "Grumble Grumble"), and a small bestiary showing what enemies are more likely to drop what items.

The only cryptic things you probably aren't going to figure out on your own are:

>you need a certain amount of hearts to get the White/Magical swords
>you need to find the Silver Arrows to beat Ganon

Neither of these two things are explained anywhere in the game, or in the manual, and they're sadly due to bad translation, because the Japanese version DOES tell you those things.

People seem to either not remember, or not understand that a map (pic related) was included with the game. In fact, I think there were maps for a bunch of games when you bought them, but couldn't tell you exactly which ones. The little manuals that came with the games also gave you hints as to where to go, what to use/when.

There were no gamefaqs (although strategy guides did start to come out for SNES), and gamegenie could only get you so far. Video games used to be about trial and error, dedication, and patience.

If you can't understand the way the incomplete guide got you rolling with the game's conventions or how the secrets and playground discussion created buzz then you don't really understand Zelda but that's fine. Zelda wasn't made for you, it was made for me. If you don't enjoy it at all it doesn't cost Nintendo one cent.

Using the map is fine, but the one that came with the game was not complete. Here's one from google - it's a little beat up, but you should be able to read everything. If you want that portion of the experience, then here you go!

idk why the only version of this map that gets posted everywhere is the one with pieces torn out of it.

It's 16 x 8 screens. Each screen has no more than one secret on it. This is the map that came with the game.

What tips would you tell someone playing Zelda 1 without directly telling them where to go and what to do?

The game came with a map that showed almost all of the overworld, with a little "don't read this unless you have to, tee hee" note on it.
Pic related, it's the first half of the map-guide-thing.

>>2524523
The manual has a step-by-step guide on how to get the wooden sword and reach the first dungeon, ending with a picture on where the second dungeon is with the hint that "you can't see the path on this little map, you have to find your way there yourself".

If you start getting frustrated, don't feel bad about consulting this map. It was included in the instruction manual.

Download the original manual and map that came with the game. Unfolding this huge, partially finished map, and exploring the unknown parts were part of the fun.

This came with the game when you bought it.
