If he didn't do that the curse would have eventually destroyed Transylvania, and if the mysterious figure in the manual opening was actually a benevolent presence, then they were most likely an angel giving him info on the only solution. Plus, Simon actually succeeded in vanquishing Dracula again effectively immediately and saved the land. The canon ending is Simon surviving too.
