I hear they "expanded" the translation a bit too much in an earlier release so people got mad and their literal translation is now accurate.

Serious question - the artwork on this game always made me think it was related to Phantasy Star, because the MC looks like Alis, but whenever I picked up the box (every week at the game store) the game didn't look like Phantasy Star, so I never rented it.

Are they related in any way?

I've started playing this game because I've played 2-4 and holy shit why is it so hard

SG-1000 is the first "console" but they also made the SC-3000 and the SC-3000H at the same time and had the same release date.
They tried to compete with both Nintendo (famicom released on same day as Sega's 3 systems) and ASCII's MSX.

Sega's 2nd console was the SG-1000 II.

Sega's 3rd console is the one you are referencing, the Sega Mark III (Master System).

It sucked. The games feel very samey if they are in the same genre.
The best game that ever came out for it was Phantasy Star. Play it. Most of the arcade ports are vastly inferior. So just use MAME instead.

Just picked up the phantasy star collection, what are some tips for the first phantasy Star ?

I'm getting into classic rpgs. Played Mother, Mana, breath of fire, Shining force, and pic related. What are your personal must plays?

I used to ignore an item's stat modifiers because I assumed game developers were too lazy/rushed to implement it. How often was I right?

Also, which Phantasy Star ROM should I play if I only tried the beginning and never finished before YouTube existed? Is it okay to think the FM music sounds worse?

Almost finished with the first Phantasy Star. Superior graphics and sound for the time, but I feel it is lacking compared to the charm of the original Dragon Quests. I guess it would be more comparable to the original Final Fantasy, maybe. Though I guess when it comes to monster designs and the compositions FF would edge out.

Still it's a really great 8-bit JRPG, ahead of most of the pack. The science-fiction fantasy meld is comfy and I'm a sucker for the aesthetic of 80s sci-fi anime. I'm excited to continue the series toward its culmination in Phantasy Star IV. Will probably continue to post updates here if these threads become a thing.
