Pokemon's a good game! I think it's similar to Dragon Quest in a lot of good ways, you can find that they share a lot of their best qualities.

As for your worry with dungeons, remember that if you cross a bridge you are probably going into a place with enemies that are harder than they were before. Also remember that you don't have to literally clear a dungeon in one sweep if you go in. If you can't find anything and it's getting desperate, just get out of there as fast as you can. (You get spells to make getting out of dungeons easier, and later you get Return which is basically a Dragon Wing for MP.)

Also another tip, there's a guy in the castle who restores your MP for free. You should just go to him and cast heal a bunch instead of staying at inns (though if you're desperate to stay in the area of some distant town, an inn is probably fine.)
