It wasn't that big in the west, but most people who had them then grew up with a strong love for shumps and beatemups. It's a console with a cult following, because even if it wasn't widely popular in most places, it did things right and had some great games worth playing.

Actually, yes, because unlike the ZX Spectrum, the Apple II computer could actually do things, like have a roleplaying game, something the ZX just didn't have the memory or processing power to do, to give you an idea on how pitiful it was. The ZX can only BARELY do some videogames.

Ultima 4 may not look that amazing to a zoomer today, and it may be a little rudimentary, but you can roll a character, save and load your game, recruit party members, explore the world, etc. Even if it's all stickfigures and squiggles, it is in fact a full videogame.

Still haven't found anything that comes close to Splatterhouse's grindhouse schlock aesthetic.
