>2- DBZ Shin Butoden
You like Shin better than 2 or 3? I get that it has a larger roster, but the gameplay is really bad... I wish I could enjoy it, but I can't, and I'm a huge fan of butoden 2 and 3. Shin is barely better than UB22 on PS1, but still bad. At least the VS portraits are very badass, I'll say that.
I like your other 2 choices though.

No idea, only secrets/cheats I can find online is the turbo speed.
I wish Shin Butoden was better, I was really excited to play this one after Super Butoden 2 and 3, and it just wasn't as good.
Also, it's just my copy of the game, or the music skips weirdly? Like when I start a match, the track starts from the middle, then it finishes, and loads another track, all in the same match. Thought it was a problem in my copy but I've read other people also mention this.
best thing about shin butoden is Satan mode

My main problem with Shin Butoden are the small stages. the SB games (and Buu Yuu Retsuden on Genesis) are great for their unique split-screen mechanic and how you can dash and fight your opponent at a distance (or chase them down), but the stages on Shin Butoden don't really allow for too much dashing, and that's a shame.
It's also sad that it didn't include a story mode (ironic for a game series called "Super Battle Stories", the only one who got a story mode is 2).

Otherwise Shin could have been the best since it has the largest roster.

UB22 was really bad.

Shin Butoden on Saturn had the same roster but was a better game, my only complaint about Shin Butoden is that the stages are way too small, Butoden games need larger stages since they use split screen.

Great games right there anon, I'm jelly, even tough I have a fairly faithful bootleg cartidge of SB2 from the old days that still kicks ass, and I can play Shin Butouden on the Saturn (backup CD). One day I'll get both legit games, good thing they aren't rare.

Also, as much as I love Shin Butouden, I agree it's not really as good as SB2, or even SB3 gameplay-wise.
But without comparing it to SB2, it's still one of the best DBZ fighting games. Great roster, interesting new mechanic to send your opponent off to another plane on the stage, classic Butouden controls, now even better thanks to the Saturn pad (you just have to change the default control setting so it can play like SB2 with both L and R to dash in each direction. On default control you can only dash with R and the d-pad, and use L to jump to the sky. Pretty shitty control scheme, but it can be fixed so no problem).
My main problem with Shin Butouden is how small the stages are, you can't dash far enough, your opponent is always near, similar to the tournament stage on SB2. The split screen goes crazy sometimes spinning around because of you or your opponent moving in the opposite direction below. That, and a few other little details that I find make it not as smooth as SB2, but presentation-wise, it's very pretty. Great animation intro, the VS screen before you go into battle are amazing, these character profile pics are badass. Music is amazing as always, lots of remixed songs from SB2 like Gohan's theme. Sadly it lacks a story mode, like Super Butouden 3. But it makes up for it by having that big ass roster.
I don't know, they fucking nailed it with Super Butouden 2 and then couldn't match that kind of quality again, in both presentation and gameplay. But Shin Butouden is pretty close.

Yeah, Butoden 1 set a lot of the things that were later perfected on Butoden 2, but boy Butoden 1 was clunky. Not being able to charge your ki made me feel desperate.

I haven't played Shin Butoden in a long while, but I remember it being good, at least as good as Butoden 2 and 3 (although I still preferred 2 overall). I should try it again though and pay more attention to the mechanics.

I fucking loved the VS screens on Shin Butoden though.

>I hear the Saturn game is pretty good also released on the PS1? I might import it when I buy more Saturn games.

There's 2 DBZ game on saturn, Legends and Shin Butoden.
Legends was also released on PS1, but the Saturn version runs better.
Shin Butoden is exclusive to Saturn and is IMO one of the best 2D DBZ fighting games ever made along with Super Butoden 2.
It uses the sprites from Ultimate Battle 22 from PS1, but it's a totally different game, UB22 is a really dull fighting game, whereas Shin Butoden plays just like the other Super Butoden games and has a great roster, definitely reccommended.
