I had some bizarre mixing of memories regarding RE1. I played it when it was released and never touched it again until this Halloween, and I would have sworn that you used a dog whistle in the main hall and it came crashing through the second story window. Probably a strange blend of the hallway dogs and the main hall door dogs. It's made weirder that something similar does happen in REmake, although I didn't touch it until two years ago. It's pretty weird how strongly you can believe in a fake memory, and even though I know it to be completely false now, it is still pretty vivid.

I disagree, even though I prefer REmake and consider it one of my favorite games ever as well as the best game in the series. There are several aspects of RE1 that are better: spiders and especially hunters are more dangerous, the cycle of life paintings are more thematically appropriate than the colored jewelry gallery, spiders and chimeras releasing their children when they die was suitably gross, and the VA is amusing and fitting for the B-movie vibe as opposed to REmake's functional yet bland VA. The mansion and some of the interactions, especially Barry, are pretty different and it also has the arrange modes to separate it even more from its successor.

It's not a great standalone piece, but the original Mansion Basement is probably the most memorable theme to me outside of the save themes and really got me on edge the first time I went down there:

Fuck those dogs. I was too scared to play it after that... ended up just watching my older brother play the game.
