The 100x has a crappy VDP with 15-bit texturing versus the later models which had full 24-bit. Pic on left is 100x, right is representative of all later hardware revisions.

Also the power supply overheats and cooks the laser over time, metal rails or not.

The PlayStation itself was compromised, at least in earlier hardware revisions, as it had 5-bit per channel colour output vs 8-bit per channel of later models.

I imagine Capcom made the decision to maintain consistency across all hardware in circulation. They also likely used blue debug consoles for development and playtesting rather than green ones.

Yeah, it also went beyond the RAM swap.

Later versions of the GPU fixed a bug in silicon to do with how texture dithering is processed.

This considerably cleans up the visual quality. On that note, I believe SGRAM actually has some minor performance improvements over VRAM. You could almost argue that Sony did a lite-upgrade of PS1 hardware compared to its launch day release.
