The book kind of ends after that.
And I think you could probably write an interesting book about the development of the Duke Nukem series, the original sidescrollers, Duke Nukem 3D, and then absolute wreck of Duke Nukem Forever, going from the later 90's to the 2010's.

I think guys like Joe Siegler, Chuck Jones, Lee Jackson, George Broussard, and fuck, even Randy Bitchford, could tell some interesting things about it, enough for a book. Blum and Gray, too, of course.
Hell, you could work in some of the general Apogee stuff, like Rise Of The Triad, and the publishing of Commander Keen, so you could get some history from Tom Hall as well, on top of Scott Miller.

There's definitely some creative minds at neo-iD, and some people with some pride in their work, otherwise it wouldn't have all those little fun touches, and the game wouldn't be so well optimized for PC and consoles.
I don't think it's the small studio of ragtag misfits they were back in the day though, AAA studious just aren't a couple of dudes in an office anymore, you're looking at 50 people minimum for anything major.

>main enemies are hitscan
Adapt to them, then, dumbass. There is *LITERALLY* nothing wrong with hitscan enemies.

>two of the weapons need an extra action to be performed to kill the enemy
One of them on the strength of being able to basically bypass the healthpoints of some of the stronger monsters in the game.
Anything you can shrink, you can crush under your boot like a cigar butt, even a Fat Commander. Hell, even a Mini Battlelord if you toggle off auto-aim and know where to hit him.
The Shrinker is immensely powerful for this.
The Freezer I'll admit is a bit finicky, but it has the advantage of projectiles deflecting, meaning you can saturate a target area with projectiles.

>exploding flying tank drones
I'll give you that these are pretty annoying in some levels, but they make very distinct sounds and if you keep your distance while pounding shotgun shells at them, you'll manage.

>hitscan miniboss boss enemies
So?

>incredibly unsatisfying rocket launchers
Really? I found the loud BOOM, big fireball, with debris and enemy bodyparts scattering wildly over the place, to be extremely satisfying.

>weak and innacurate pistol
It's no cannon, but there's nothing wrong with the precision, not sure where you get that idea.

>chaingun runs out of ammo super fast
Not really, don't just uncontrollably hang on the trigger and you'll do fine. For that matter, there's usually plenty of ammo around.

>shotgun requires two or many more pumps
What? No it doesn't.

Duke Nukem 3D
Fast paced 90s shooter action, great music, fantastic level design, unique and lovable personality

So I have never played any of the Half-Life games, and I just picked up the first one in the sale recently.

Should I play it vanilla? Or should I run it with Half-Nuked? I saw the trailer for it and it looks like the sequel to Duke 3D we never got.

Anyone notice how in Duke Nukem 3D, the first level of Shrapnel City's music theme sounds a lot like the end credits to Bladerunner?

I love this game almost as much as I love Doom.
Which is to say, I love it quite a lot.

I really disagree, DNF took the weapons of DN3D, basically as they were, but put them in a modern military style shooter of the 2010s, and those weapons really don't play off each other well with a 2 weapon limit.
The combat flows HORRIBLY in DNF, trying to shoehorn in modern mechanics and sensibilities (like a halfbaked regen health) into a setup that really doesn't fit it.
It feels like they *tried* to make it more advanced than DN3D, yet dumbed it down and made it dull and frustrating.
DNF is built on the foundations of lots of previous revisions and philosophy changes and then is brutally forced to fit into the constraints of a modern kind of shooter it just has no business being. It is the Alacatraz of first FPS, you tear it apart and you see foundational work and ideas from eras before and it's all just haphazardly stacked. Some of it even lies in the open, next to the new stuff that's forced in.

Doom 3; everything works conventionally, you carry all your guns, you carry all the ammo you find, you pick up or charge health and armor as you discover it, etc. The game doesn't really force you to use X or Y weapon by circumstances, you can pretty much use whatever weapon you feel like that you have with you.
You can even realistically and effectively face like 75% of all the combat encounters in the game with the chainsaw if you feel like it (IMO, this is the most fun way to play). The level design is a bit dark, the reliance on jumpscares and closets gets trite soon, desensitizing you to them, and the monsters aren't *impossible* to tell apart, but some of them are quite boring and most of them have a similar palette and aesthetic.
It feels like it sort of tries to be a Half-Life game, though missing a few important marks, it's got dull parts, and flaws, but it feels like there was a clear and concise goal in what it was supposed to be, they didn't delay it endlessly and overhaul it time after time to make it something it wasn't or shouldn't be.
